In the Han Dynasty, there were more than 30 individuals considered "emperors," but why do we only write about "24 emperors"? Empress Lü, after Emperor Hui, ruled for 8 years with imperial authority, and the Records of the Grand Historian also included her in the "Basic Annals," yet she did not directly claim the title of "emperor." Emperor Hui had a "young emperor" whose name was never recorded, Emperor Zhao had a successor who reigned for only 27 days, Emperor An had a "young emperor" who ruled for only 7 months, and Emperor Ling had another "young emperor" who also ruled for 7 months. These four individuals did not rule for a full year and did not issue a new era name. During the War against Wang Mang, Liu Xuan may have claimed the imperial title and established an era name, but he did not unify the country. Wang Mang, though closely related to the Han, established a separate dynasty. Therefore, these seven individuals are not counted, and the book only lists the "24 emperors." We have strived to "center around the main thread of 24 emperors, weaving together the history of the Western and Eastern Han dynasties," striving to present the three-dimensional lives of the Han emperors and the era's characteristics of the Great Han Dynasty. We hope this portrayal can establish an image of the Han Dynasty in the hearts of readers.
