Features: Zen poetry, also known as Buddhist poetry, refers to poems that propagate Buddhist principles or possess Zen-like charm and interest. Since Buddhism was introduced from India to China during the Han and Jin dynasties, such poems have emerged. Not only did many monks compose them, but also many literati who revered Buddhism, including many renowned poets, wrote them. According to rough estimates, the total number reaches over 30,000, making it an important part of ancient Chinese poetry heritage and another gem in the garden of ancient poetry. Many outstanding Zen poems remain timeless in their appeal to this day. To promote excellent Chinese culture, we have compiled this book, selecting 300 outstanding Zen poems from ancient monks and literati, accompanied by translation, annotations, and analyses. The aim is to gather the essence of ancient Zen poetry and provide a richly diverse collection for Zen poetry enthusiasts and readers. The selected Zen poems can be broadly divided into two parts. One part consists of Zen-themed poems, including general Buddhist philosophical poems, as well as special Zen poems unique to Chinese Chan Buddhism, such as those offering guidance (), expressing enlightenment (), and praising ancient masters (). The characteristic of this part is its rich philosophical depth and wisdom. The other part reflects the lives of monks and literati as they practice and achieve enlightenment, such as poems about mountain dwellings (), monastic temples (), and traveling (). The main feature of this part is its portrayal of the empty, clear, tranquil, sacred Zen realm and mindset. These poems often describe monastic temples and mountain dwellings, depicting secluded and winding landscapes, pure and dust-free, transcending worldly concerns. They also convey the mindset of monks or literati who are free from worldly possessions, free from all worries, and maintain a tranquil and serene state. Most of the Zen poems selected in this book are renowned masterpieces with exceptional artistic expression. For instance, some Zen-themed poems are masterful in their use of metaphors to convey philosophical insights. Some mountain and temple poems are deeply intertwined with scenery, subtle and profound, rich in imagery, possessing moving artistic charm and value. Regarding the format of this book:
1. The selected Zen poems are arranged in chronological order by era and the order of the authors' birth and death dates, without distinguishing between monks or literati or their poetic styles. The book includes 188 authors and 300 poems.
2. The main text of the book is divided into four parts: author introductions, annotations, modern translations, and brief analyses. The author introductions, annotations, and analyses are concise yet elegant. The analysis section focuses on explaining the Zen philosophy and meaning, as it involves many Buddhist allusions and terms, which are appropriately explained. Since many Zen poems are profound and difficult to understand, modern translations are provided to aid comprehension.
