Features: The "Self-Study Manual" is a supplementary teaching material and reference book for teachers and self-learners using the newly compiled "Xu Guozhang English" and . The "Self-Study Manual" can also be used independently as a practice workbook for grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, as well as a collection of self-assessment test questions. The "Self-Study Manual" is divided into the following three parts: Answers to Exercises (ANSWERSTOEXERCISES); Self-Help Test Papers (SELF-HELPTESTPAPERS) with Answers; and Dictation Passages (PASSAGESFORDICTATION). The answers to exercises include all the exercises and standard answers from the newly compiled "Xu Guozhang English" and . The exercise section is printed in the same format as the original book. The answers are printed in bold, making them clear and easy to find. Readers without the textbook can use this manual alone for practice, making it convenient and practical. It should be noted that some exercises, especially translation exercises from Chinese to English, may have more than one correct answer. Due to space limitations and considering the current level of readers, we provide only one of the better answers for reference by teachers and readers.
Self-Help Test Papers The "Self-Study Manual" contains 32 self-assessment test papers, one for each lesson. It includes approximately 1,500 grammar and vocabulary exercises; 32 cloze tests; and 32 reading comprehension exercises. Each self-assessment test paper includes the following sections:

E. READINGCOMPREHENSION
Sections A and B are designed based on the lesson content to test vocabulary mastery. Due to the limited number of new words in each lesson, some vocabulary may repeat in sections A and B. Test-takers should be truthful and not change answers after completing the SPELLINGCHECK.
Section C is a multiple-choice exercise that includes grammar, sentence structures, and vocabulary practice. Each test paper has 35 questions, and the entire book is arranged in order of difficulty, progressing from beginner to intermediate levels.
Section D is a fill-in-the-blank exercise, primarily using short passages and dialogues rather than single sentences. This section focuses on understanding the content of the passage and also includes some grammar and vocabulary testing.
Section E is a reading comprehension exercise. The 32 passages included in this book cover a variety of topics and are arranged in order of difficulty. The test questions mainly target the understanding of the passage content, as well as the comprehension of individual words and sentences within the passage.
The standard answers to the self-assessment test papers are provided at the end of the book for readers to check independently.
Dictation Passages This book includes 52 dictation passages, most of which were collected and used by the author in actual teaching over the years. The content is diverse and the difficulty level is moderate. These passages are primarily intended for teachers to use in the classroom, but self-learners can also use them as supplementary reading materials. Before the dictation passages section, the author wrote an article titled "How to Dictate," based on their teaching experience, to provide reference for teachers.
