Will I still have my period after bleeding while taking birth control pills?

Patient's question:

Last night, to prevent pregnancy, I took a birth control pill. This morning, I started bleeding. I want to ask the doctor a few questions. Will I still have my period after taking the birth control pill and starting to bleed?

Doctor's answer:

If you take emergency contraception pills, you will generally experience withdrawal bleeding again about five days later. Under normal circumstances, the bleeding will not last more than one week. If the bleeding amount is similar to your menstrual period, it can be considered as one menstrual cycle. If the bleeding amount is less, your period may still come on time, but it may also be delayed. Close and careful observation is recommended. It is not advisable to take emergency contraception pills too frequently or in excessive amounts to avoid menstrual disorders and the risk of secondary infertility.
