Liu Dekuan, a disciple of Dong Haichuan, created the direct-line Bagua Sixty-Four Palm based on the principles of the "I Ching." This routine is divided into eight sections, with eight forms in each section, totaling sixty-four palms. Each section begins and ends with the "Old Monk Carrying a Bowl" stance. Why was the direct-line Bagua created? It is said that at the time, Liu Dekuan was a martial arts instructor in the military. The direct-line practice method saved space and was more convenient for group training compared to the circular practice method. Since Liu Dekuan created this routine, it was later called "Liu Style Eight Methods" or "Liu Style Sixty-Four Palms." Additionally, because its form involves direct-line back-and-forth practice, it is commonly referred to as "Direct-Line Bagua Palm." The full name of the direct-line Bagua Sixty-Four Palm is also "Direct-Line Bagua Sixty-Four Dispersed Hand Palm" because it is composed of sixty-four separate combat techniques.
