Preface to "The Big Foolish Dog Hack"
"Ding, ding, da, the little trumpet is starting to broadcast!" Most parents of young children in their childhood probably heard this sound. Perhaps they are still familiar with it today, just like today's young children are familiar with "The Big Windmill" and "Seven Colors of Light." In the "Little Trumpet" program on China Radio Network, there is a fairy tale character called "The Big Foolish Dog Hack," who is deeply loved by children. The big foolish dog travels far and wide, "foolish but not stupid," with a somewhat one-sided view of problems, a perception of things but a lack of knowledge, and a kind heart. Although he often makes a lot of jokes, he is very lovable. "The Stories of the Big Foolish Dog Hack" were broadcast continuously for more than 50 episodes, many children listened to it every time, the more they listened, the more they loved it, and the smarter they became. The author of it is Comrade Li Jiacheng, the head of the "Little Trumpet" program group of China Radio Network. Later, "The Big Foolish Dog" was illustrated by Comrade Zhang Canhua and appeared in the form of cartoon serial illustrations in the "Nine-Year Compulsory Education Activity Curriculum Leaflet Materials," a research achievement of the National Education Science "Eight-Five" Plan, and became a good friend of children in the 1990s. During the "Nine-Five" period, Comrade Li Jiacheng participated in the sub-project "Children's Science and Technology Activities and Teacher Training" under the key project of the Ministry of Education's "Nine-Five" National Education Science Plan. The "Big Foolish Dog" he compiled then entered the trial edition of "The Smart Monkey," where the big foolish dog mostly interacted with high-new technology: cloning, robots, and seemed even more lovable. In addition, the big foolish dog occasionally appeared in publications such as "Parents Must Read." By 1998, the influence of the big foolish dog was growing, and many teachers and parents requested a set of "The Big Foolish Dog" books and an animated series of "The Big Foolish Dog." The team members also proposed that as activity materials for the small class under the "Nine-Five" project, a set of such books would be very much needed. Therefore, as the deputy head of the general research team, I found Comrade Li Jiacheng. At that time, he was already seriously ill. I hesitated to say my purpose: first, to write three new episodes of the big foolish dog for "The Smart Monkey," and second, whether to compile a book of "The Big Foolish Dog" as supplementary reading for the small class. I said, "You're not feeling well, so why don't you just organize the ones that have already been published." "No, we need to write new ones, for the 21st century!" Comrade Li Jiacheng interrupted me. Seeing his determined gaze, I knew how innocent his heart was. For the sake of the children, he always worked earnestly. That way, the manuscripts for "The Smart Monkey" and "The Big Foolish Dog" were born in the hospital according to the original schedule. Comrade Li Jiacheng then called me to pick up the manuscripts at the hospital. That time, we had a very good discussion. When I came back and looked at the manuscripts under the light, I couldn't help but exclaim in admiration: the big foolish dog was again running around in the environment of the 21st century, exploring and pursuing, with high-new technology and fairy tales organically combined. I immediately called the academic secretary of the general research team: "Should we recommend 'The Big Foolish Dog Hack' as supplementary reading for the small class to the experimental bases and kindergartens across the country?" It was already 11 p.m. at that time, and I broke my habit of going to bed early as a "lark" and couldn't sleep at all. Scenes of Comrade Li Jiacheng creating scientific and literary works for children flashed before my eyes: his "The Frog Magistrate" attracted a large number of young children, from radio to television, his "Children's Fun Animal Science" was indeed a good helper for parents; his collection of children's songs "The Little Turtle Taking a Taxi" was catchy; his big foolish dog made children smarter and smarter. His works have already exceeded 1,000 pieces, many of which have won awards. Comrade Li Jiacheng was right: "We need scientific knowledge, but we also need the charm of young children; we need fairy tale characters, but we also need activities that fit children's psychology. This requires the author to not only delve into knowledge but also to have a childlike heart." He said so and did so. I remember once, someone raised a question about the hibernation of bears in his "The Big Foolish Dog," and he actually made a one-and-a-half-hour phone call from Beijing to Tianjin, introducing the arguments from more than 10 scientific books to the editorial board. For one manuscript of "The Smart Monkey," he rewrote it more than 10 times. Today, "The Big Foolish Dog Hack" has finally met the children. Here, I recommend this masterpiece to kindergartens and children across the country, and let our children become smarter and smarter. April 12, 1999, Beijing
