1. Manufacturing Methods of Machine Parts
In industrial, agricultural, and transportation production, a large number of machinery and various tools are used. These machinery and tools are composed of many different types of components. Among them, only a few parts are directly manufactured through methods such as casting, forging, welding, and pressure processing. Most parts are produced by cutting processes like turning, milling, planing, shaping, grinding, boring, and tapping, where excess material is removed from the workpiece.
2. Planing and Shaping
1. Planing: A cutting process where a planer tool moves horizontally relative to the workpiece in a reciprocating linear motion, as shown in Figure 1—1a.
2. Shaping: A cutting process where a shaping tool moves vertically relative to the workpiece in a reciprocating linear motion.
3. Applications of Planers and Shapers
On a planer, it is possible to machine planes, parallel surfaces, perpendicular surfaces, step surfaces, right-angled grooves, inclined surfaces, (tail slots), T-shaped grooves, V-shaped grooves, curved surfaces, composite surfaces, internal surfaces of holes, gear teeth, and gear racks.
