Features: Among the Song Dynasty lyricists, Liu Yong is one of the most celebrated. His popular lyrics were widely circulated and beloved by the masses, so much so that it was said, "Wherever there is a well, people can sing Liu Yong's lyrics." He made significant contributions to the development of Song Dynasty ci poetry and was a great lyricist who pioneered the artistic characteristics of Song ci. However, his cultural significance far exceeded the realm of Song ci and became a typical example of the cultural personality of ancient Chinese literati. Cultural personality is an individual's psychological traits shaped by specific cultural conditions and patterns. It is composed of the subject's values, behavioral patterns, and their relationship with cultural traditions. Once formed, the cultural personality of a historical figure dominates their social behavior and spiritual activities, guiding them to assume specific social roles.
Liu Yong (987–1057) emerged during the prosperous and culturally vibrant era of the Northern Song Dynasty, a time when the urban petty bourgeoisie was rising and the new musical literature form—the ci—was maturing. He was born into a scholarly family with a strong Confucian tradition and was also influenced by the Taoist culture of his hometown, Wuyi Mountain in Fengnan, Fujian, forming a spirit of proactive striving and pursuit of freedom. In his youth, when he arrived in the Northern Song capital (Kaifeng, Henan), he was quickly drawn to urban secular culture and entertainment, embraced the mindset of the petty bourgeoisie, immersed himself in song and dance, and experienced the meaning of youthful life. After failing the imperial examination, he adopted a radical attitude of disdain for official success and material gain, instead turning to the creation of popular literature.
