With this book in hand, you will possess the key to unlock the treasure trove of diabetes prevention and treatment knowledge. Health is the cornerstone of life; health is the greatest wealth; health is a basic human right; health is a sign of happiness; health is a symbol of civilized progress. Diabetes is a serious chronic lifelong disease that endangers health. Its incidence rate ranks third after cardiovascular disease and tumors, making it a social menace. In recent years, the living standards of urban and rural people in China have been continuously improving, and lifestyles and dietary structures have changed, leading to a steady increase in the incidence of "rich diseases" like diabetes. Many patients suffer from blindness and disability due to diabetes, imposing a heavy burden on society, families, and patients. The incidence of diabetes among adults in China is approximately 3%, and a large number of asymptomatic diabetic patients remain undiagnosed. Among those diagnosed, 60% have poor blood sugar control. The worse the blood sugar control, the higher the incidence of retinopathy and the greater the risk of vision loss. Diabetes accounts for 4% of all blindness cases, and diabetic patients have a 10-25 times higher risk of blindness than the general population. Therefore, the dangers of diabetes must be given sufficient attention. The high incidence of diabetes, coupled with the risk of diabetic eye disease for every diabetic patient, makes the prevention and treatment of diabetes a long and arduous task. Strengthening the publicity and popularization of scientific knowledge on diabetes and diabetic eye disease is of great significance for improving the health level and quality of life of the people. Although diabetes cannot be completely cured at present, through the joint efforts of doctors and patients, the condition can be controlled, the occurrence and development of eye complications can be reduced, and ultimately, the goal of preventing and treating blindness can be achieved. As an ophthalmologist with years of clinical experience, I have encountered many patients in practice who only discovered they had diabetes during the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. Some patients, although aware of their diabetes, did not adhere to comprehensive treatment, failing to perform blood sugar tests or control their diet for a year or two. Long-term hyperglycemia leads to severe complications in the eyes or throughout the body. Most patients lack knowledge about diabetes prevention and treatment and are eager to learn popular science knowledge. Based on long-term clinical practice and extensive research, we compiled this book with the aim of making it an excellent textbook for popular science education on diabetes, especially diabetic eye disease, for diabetic patients and their families. This will enable more people to master popular science knowledge about diabetes and diabetic eye disease, learn scientific self-care, self-monitoring, self-prevention, and self-treatment, and achieve long-term effective blood sugar control, reducing and slowing the occurrence and development of complications.
