Features: Chinese social thought is one of the most distinctive branches of sociology as a discipline. In-depth research on the history of Chinese social thought is a fundamental task for building a sociological theory with Chinese characteristics. The first volume of Wang Chuhui's History of Chinese Social Thought was first published in early 1989. After ten years of effort, the second volume has finally been completed and published alongside the revised edition of the first volume, which is truly a cause for celebration.
First, let's address the academic positioning of the history of Chinese social thought. Currently, sociology departments across all universities in China have included the history of Chinese social thought as one of the required courses, which is very necessary. Especially in today's and future higher education, which emphasizes a solid foundation and broad knowledge, the history of Chinese social thought should be a key area for students in sociology departments to study and master. If a Chinese sociology graduate is not clear about the thoughts of the people and thinkers of past dynasties on social life, social issues, and ideal social models, it will be difficult for them to conduct in-depth research on contemporary Chinese society, nor can they make outstanding contributions to Chinese sociology and social development. Therefore, I suggest that students in sociology departments, as well as those in other humanities and social sciences, should read more works on the history of Chinese social thought. Wang Chuhui's History of Chinese Social Thought is one such highly recommended essential reading.
This book covers social thought during the Song and Yuan periods, social thought during the Ming and Qing periods, modern social thought, and a historical review and outlook on the research of the history of Chinese social thought.
