Short stories differ from novels not only in length. Although some entertaining tales also fall under the category of short stories, strictly speaking, most short stories are carefully selected fragments from real life, embodying typicality, representativeness, and enlightenment, used to reveal broader and deeper truths. So, what exactly is a short story? To date, no authoritative and complete definition has been established. The New Columbia Encyclopedia states: "Short stories often limit themselves to descriptions of characters and settings, creating a dynamic effect. Their length typically ranges from two thousand to ten thousand words." Edgar Allan Poe, as a pioneer of the short story genre, summarized its characteristics: First, the story is brief, capable of being read in one sitting; second, the work aims to evoke a mood, emotion, or state of mind, with every sentence contributing to this overall effect; third, it must be a unified whole, allowing no digressions or irrelevant additions; fourth, it appears simple yet is rich in symbolic meaning. In summary, a short story is a fictional prose narrative, usually featuring a single main character and plot, conveying a theme, with a short time span, a setting limited to one or two locations, and most elements carrying symbolic significance, requiring active reader engagement. Like impressionist paintings, short stories are artworks that feel both complete and unfinished. They capture a fleeting moment, expressing flowing colors and indeterminate shapes. Alternatively, they resemble a snapshot, capturing a side of a scene. The image itself speaks for itself, requiring no detailed explanation, yet it lingers deeply in the reader's mind, evoking associations. The appeal of this snapshot lies in its seemingly casual and spontaneous nature, yet it subtly embeds human intention within nature, giving it a sense of simplicity, natural perfection, and effortless brilliance. The short story is a literary genre that is both independent and closely connected to other art forms: concise in length yet capable of resonating deeply; written in prose yet imbued with poetic passion; composed of mere black and white ink yet sparkling with vibrant colors. This compact form is a direct reflection of modern life. British critic G.K. Chesterton wrote: "The appeal of the short story is not merely its form; it expresses the authentic feeling of life's brevity and fragility; it suggests that life is merely an impression, perhaps even an illusion—beyond the small episodes, we perceive no fundamental or lasting essence." For this very reason, renowned writer D.H. Lawrence remarked: "When writing a short story, the key is to select striking details—several notable details—to leave the reader with a sudden and swift impression."
