How to treat trichomoniasis of the vagina

Patient's question:

Please help the doctor answer this question. I am a woman, unmarried, and have itching in my private area. The hospital examination said it was trichomoniasis. Please ask how to treat trichomoniasis.

Doctor's answer:

After vaginal douching, or at night, insert 200 mg of metronidazole into the vagina. A 10-day course constitutes one treatment. Alternatively, you can use one tablet of metronidazole or 200 mg of carbaryl inserted into the vagina.
Precautions during treatment: To prevent re-infection, during treatment, underwear and hygiene utensils should be boiled and sterilized. Due to the likelihood of recurrence after treatment, re-examination should be conducted 3–5 days after menstruation. Avoid sexual activity during treatment to prevent re-infection. If re-examination is not possible and symptoms reappear after menstruation, retreatment may be necessary.
For cases that do not improve with treatment, a thorough examination of urine or prostatic fluid from both the patient and their partner should be conducted. If trichomonads are detected, oral metronidazole treatment should be administered concurrently. Confirmation of self-healing is only possible after three consecutive menstrual cycles with negative trichomonad tests in vaginal discharge.
