Economy and Society (Volume 1)

Author: (German) Max Weber
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-07-01
Features: Max Weber (1864-1920) was a renowned sociologist and philosopher in Germany and a highly influential scholar in contemporary Western academia. The Economic and Social Order was published posthumously, edited and compiled by his wife, Marianne Weber. The reason it is described as "edited and compiled" is twofold: first, Weber did not leave a comprehensive structural plan for the book during his lifetime; second, the latter part, known as the "concrete" sociology section, was written before the former part, the "abstract" sociology section (according to the marked writing dates, the former part was written during the period of the Second World War from 1918 to 1920; the latter part was written around 1911-1913 before the Second World War). Therefore, in the preface of the first edition, it was stated that the order of the chapters had to be arranged and decided by Marianne Weber and her colleagues. As for the unfinished chapters, they were left as they were. Regarding the changes in the book's title, the compilers provided a detailed explanation and clarification in the preface to the publication.
