For contemporary Chinese comic creators, apart from Hong Kong, all creators face a rather challenging creative environment. Since the heyday of comics in Taiwan in the 1980s, local creation has been wandering on a bumpy path. Each comic artist is like a versatile deity, having to master everything from script and storyboard to character backgrounds and visual cues without formal training. While publishers have also strived to learn from Japan's editorial systems, they have often been in a state of trial and error. Japan's powerful works surged into the local market in a short time, and local comic artists were left to fight tooth and nail. They witnessed one after another falling by the wayside, with fewer and fewer comrades left, while the new generation of comic artists, lacking platforms for publication, grew increasingly scarce.
A few years ago, adventurous comic creators like Ao Youxiang, Sun Jiayu, and Lin Zhengde from Taiwan, who had achieved success,, seemingly. After engaging in exchanges with mainland comic creators, observing the actual creative and publishing environment, and experiencing firsthand the development of comics in mainland China, I found that in terms of painting skills and the use of tools, mainland China has indeed reached a certain level, and some comic artists have come to understand the true spirit of creation, continuously improving. I am deeply moved by fellow creators who are passionate about comic creation, and I hope that on the international stage of comics, our local artists can carve out a place for themselves. Here, I share my modest experiences in forging ahead independently, hoping to spark further insights from others, combining the creative wisdom of more creators to provide comic readers with more and better works, and to create a truly independent comic market that belongs to the Chinese people, free from reliance on foreign countries.
