Liu Xinwu (1942–) is a contemporary writer. His pen names include Liu Lü and Zhao Zhuanghan. He was born in Chengdu, Sichuan. In 1950, he moved to Beijing with his father. During his secondary school years, he developed an interest in literature. In 1961, he graduated from the Chinese Department of Beijing Normal College and later served as a secondary school teacher for 15 years. After 1976, he worked as an editor at Beijing Publishing House, participating in the founding of October and serving as an editor. Since 1979, he has held positions such as member of the Chinese Writers' Association and editor-in-chief of People's Literature, and joined the China Center of the International P.E.N. Club. In 1987, he visited the United States and gave lectures at 13 universities.
Liu Xinwu began publishing works in 1958. In 1977, he published the short story The Class Monitor, which is considered the beginning of literature in the new era and won the first prize for the best short story of the year. He later published other short stories such as The Position of Love, Wake Up, Brother, and I Love Every Green Leaf (which won the National Best Short Story Award), which stirred strong responses. He has published short story collections like The Class Monitor, Reminiscence of Alma Mater, and Selected Short Stories of Liu Xinwu, as well as middle-grade novels such as The Death of Qin Keqing, Green Leaves and Gold, Big-Eyed Cat, Melody of the Metropolis, Overpass, As You Wish, Wangfujing Kaleidoscope, Agate Ring, A Window of Light, and Blue Demoness, as well as a documentary novel Ode to the Bus, and full-length novels such as Bell Tower and Drum Tower (which won the second Mao Dun Literature Prize of the National), Wind Passing by, and Four- Tower. He has also published collections of essays, theoretical works, and children's literature, as well as the eight-volume Collected Works of Liu Xinwu. Liu Xinwu has a keen sense of life and is skilled at macroscopic rational analysis, writing many novels with social reflection. His style is rigorous, and his works are rich in meaning.
