1. Basic music theory is the abbreviation of fundamental music theory, which serves as the foundation for students to further study harmony, counterpoint, form, orchestration, and other theoretical courses. It is also one of the compulsory subjects for different majors in music college entrance exams.
2. The writing of this book follows the following principles as much as possible:
(1) Systematicity. Based on the teaching syllabus of basic music theory, this book designs a rich variety of question types around the content and scope of basic music theory to systematically train each knowledge point. The content progresses from simple to complex, aligning with the scientific nature of gradual learning in theory. Due to space constraints, the content of basic theory in traditional Chinese music and modern music theory has not been included.
(2) Comprehensiveness. Learning music theory requires students not only to thoroughly understand and master the principles explained in the textbook but also to possess the ability to solve problems quickly and accurately. More importantly, it demands the integration and comprehensive application of knowledge as well as multidirectional thinking skills. To this end, this book includes many exercises with high difficulty, flexibility, and comprehensiveness, with a significant number of "multiple-choice questions" requiring the selection of all correct answers. These short questions involve multiple knowledge points.
(3) Innovation. Based on the characteristics of basic music theory, this book designs many new question types, and all melodic examples for tonal analysis are newly composed or adapted from folk songs.
(4) Practicality. Theory serves practice. To enhance students' practical and exam-taking abilities, the author analyzes the key and difficult points of each content in basic music theory and their proportions in past college entrance exams, increasing the training weight of intervals, chords, tonality, and tonal analysis. Some exercises on tonal analysis of melodies in simple notation are also designed.
3. To broaden horizons, improve musical literacy, and develop thinking skills, students can systematically practice to lay a solid foundation for future musical studies, while candidates for music exams can selectively practice according to the requirements of their majors.
4. The content of this book consists of three parts: comprehensive exercises, simulated tests, and appendices. To facilitate self-study and self-assessment, the comprehensive exercises are designed with a maximum score of 100, and all reference answers to the exercises are provided. Additionally, careful attention has been paid to the layout of the test papers and the distribution of scores.
