Characteristics of Elderly Physique
At the age of 60, one enters the elderly stage. As people age, a series of changes occur in their physical morphology and functions. In reality, after the age of 40, the body gradually shows signs of aging in its morphology and functions, and by the age of 60, these changes become more apparent externally and functionally.
Physiologically, the main changes in the human body are two-fold:
1. Changes in metabolic processes within the body's tissue composition. The proportion of inactive parts increases, for example, compared to the age of 20, body fat can increase by 10% to 20% at the age of 60. Meanwhile, intracellular water content tends to decrease with age, leading to reduced intracellular fluid volume and cell count, resulting in dry and loose skin, as well as organ atrophy.
2. Decline in the functions of various organs, particularly in digestion and absorption, metabolism, excretion, and circulation. Symptoms such as reduced appetite and bowel movements may appear. The decline in organ function is a fundamental characteristic of aging. If this condition is not properly managed, it can accelerate the aging process, making people feel older prematurely.
1. Changes in Digestive Function in the Elderly
Elderly people are prone to periodontitis, cavities, and atrophic changes in their teeth, leading to tooth loss or significant wear. Due to tooth atrophy, dental pain is also common. These dental changes affect chewing and digestion. The reduced sense of taste in the elderly affects appetite, making meals less enjoyable and reducing food intake. Some elderly may experience abnormal taste and smell, such as difficulty distinguishing between salty and sweet or an inability to detect the aroma of food. This also impacts appetite and food intake.
Digestion requires the secretion of digestive fluids by digestive glands. In the elderly, these glands atrophy, and the secretion of digestive fluids decreases significantly, leading to impaired digestive ability. For example, reduced saliva secretion, thin and watery saliva, and decreased amylase content; decreased gastric fluid volume and acidity, along with insufficient pepsin, directly affect food digestion; and reduced secretion and activity of pancreatic enzymes (proteases, lipases, and amylases), further weakening the ability to digest food.
Due to the atrophy of teeth, reduced sense of taste, and decreased secretion of digestive fluids in the elderly, their eating, digestion, and absorption are adversely affected, leading to malnutrition, weakened physical condition, and reduced activity. The more activity decreases and food intake is reduced, the more harmful it is to health. This creates a vicious cycle where reduced activity and food intake further accelerate aging. Therefore, elderly health care must focus on dietary regulation to replenish the body's needs.
2. Changes in Cardiovascular Function in the Elderly
Due to physiological aging of the heart, myocardial atrophy occurs, along with hardening of the myocardium and endocardium, reducing effective circulating blood volume. This can develop into both physiological and pathological hardening of coronary arteries, decreasing blood flow to the myocardium, lowering oxygen consumption, and further impacting cardiac function. This may even lead to angina, insufficient myocardial blood supply, and coronary heart disease.
After the age of 50, the physiological hardening of blood vessel walls becomes more pronounced, elasticity decreases, and lipid deposition occurs in the vessel walls, even increasing fragility. As a result, the elderly are more prone to conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, cerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral thrombosis.
