Resurrection

Author: Leo Tolstoy

Publish Date: 2003-09-01
Features: The Resurrection is a later work by the Russian literary giant Leo Tolstoy. It exposes and criticizes Russian society with unprecedented intensity, dedicating significant portions to revealing the darkness of courts, prisons, and government agencies, as well as the incompetence, cruelty, and reactionary nature of officials and the law. Lenin aptly remarked on Tolstoy when evaluating him: "In his later works, Tolstoy launched fierce critiques of all modern state, religious, social, and economic systems," achieving a "clear-eyed realism" that "tore off all masks" and was a "genius artist who created a masterpiece in world literature." On the other hand, he was an ardent advocate of doctrines such as "resisting evil without violence," earning the label of a "Tolstoyan" who was, in turn, dismissed as a "degenerate, hysterical."
