Features: Pu Xuezhai (1893.8—1966.8) was a Manchu from Beijing, renowned for his Chinese painting. He served as the Director of the Fine Arts Department at Fu Ren University and as a member of the Beijing Literary and Historical Research Institute. Born into a Qing Dynasty imperial family, Pu Xuezhai developed a deep love for arts from a young age. In 1911, he began to immerse himself in the study and practice of Chinese painting, calligraphy, and traditional music. During his youth, he learned the guqin (a traditional zither) from Jia Runfeng, a disciple of the renowned guqin master Huang Mianzhi. Later, he switched to other instruments such as the sanxian and actively participated in performances until his later years. His guqin skills were exceptional, characterized by a free and unrestrained style. After the liberation, he held positions such as Vice President of the Guqin Research Association and Special Performer at the Institute of Folk Music. Influenced by his family, he began learning calligraphy and painting from a young age. After the Xinhai Revolution, he supported himself through painting and calligraphy while also serving as a professor and the Director of the Fine Arts Department at Fu Ren University. After 1949, he was appointed as a member of the Beijing Literary and Historical Research Institute and an Honorary Artist of the Beijing Art Institute. He excelled in landscape painting, figure painting, ink orchids, and calligraphy. He was a member of the China Artists Association, Vice President of the Beijing branch of the Artists Association, and the President of the Calligraphy Research Society. He published "Xuezhai Painting Collection." He cherished his country's rich cultural and artistic heritage and dedicated his life to promoting the study and inheritance of traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, and music, achieving remarkable accomplishments. Whether in his calligraphy, landscape paintings, ink orchids, guqin, or sanxian, he possessed a peaceful, elegant, and scholarly style, earning him the reputation of a master of his generation.
