Gloria

Author: (Spanish) Galdós / Wang Zhiquan / Zhao Deming
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-06-01
Features: The work primarily depicts the story of Daniel Molton, a young German Jew, and Gloria, a Catholic girl, who cannot maintain their mutual love due to their differing religious beliefs. Through the portrayal of Gloria and Daniel's tragic love, the novel exposes the hypocrisy and cruelty of religious power. In Gloria, there is an irrefutable logic, born from the truth and wisdom of thought; it is utterly clear and free from elements. Gloria is like a perfectly conceived, clearly outlined, uniquely executed, and harmoniously shaded picture. It is cleverly arranged, each stroke shines, and it is neither excessive nor insufficient—just right. The structure, depth, and beauty of thought, the shifting and vivid scenes—sometimes humorous, sometimes touching, sometimes tender, sometimes passionate—all deserve a separate essay for discussion. The language is natural and pure, free from any artificiality. This reflects the author's open mind and noble, courageous, passionate, and pure temperament. Moreover, when necessary, subtle critiques and satirical language are skillfully employed. Unfortunately, among our writers, an artificial style is still quite common, even the most experienced and cautious writers are led astray by the devil of affectation. Perhaps Pérez Galdós is the only writer who has escaped this prevailing plague.
