Patient's question:
In recent days, the external genital area has been particularly itchy, and there is a significant increase in discharge. Now, every time I urinate, it causes pain. I don't know what might have caused this, and I'm now looking to ask here: How should trichomoniasis be treated effectively?Doctor's answer:
Trichomoniasis can be spread through sexual contact or indirect contact. Swimming pools, hot tubs, and especially bathtubs can serve as places for the spread of trichomoniasis. Metronidazole (200mg) is taken orally three times a day for a 7-day course. A 1% lactic acid or 0.5% acetic acid or 1:5000 potassium permanganate rinse of the vagina or sitz bath can be performed once daily, followed by the application of 200mg metronidazole vaginally. Alternatively, agents such as didecoxin or carbarsone can be used.Note: Both partners should be aware of the treatment. Sexual activity should be avoided during treatment. Underwear and towels should be boiled to sterilize them. Alcohol should be avoided during medication. After the trichomoniasis test results turn negative, a vaginal discharge test should be repeated after each menstrual period. Three consecutive tests showing negative results for trichomoniasis are required. Since symptoms vary among patients, the treatment methods may differ. Therefore, it is recommended that patients seek diagnosis and treatment as soon as symptoms are noticed.
