What is a better way to treat trichomoniasis of the external genitalia?

Patient's question:

Every day, my private area itches a lot, and sometimes it also feels painful. I don't know why, but when I use medication, it improves, and when I stop, it comes back. The examination revealed inflammation. Could you please tell me the best way to treat trichomoniasis vulvitis?

Doctor's answer:

The treatment of trichomoniasis requires the combined use of oral medication and external treatment. Metronidazole is a highly effective drug for completely eliminating trichomonads.
(1) General treatment: During the treatment period, it is essential to maintain external genital hygiene to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Wash the external genitalia daily, change underwear and pants, and sterilize them. Avoid spicy foods and alcohol during the acute phase. Sexual activity is strictly prohibited, and close relatives should also be treated.
(2) Adjusting the vaginal pH: Trichomonads thrive in a pH range of 5.5–6. Therefore, using a solution of acetic acid and chlorhexidine to wash the vagina can lower the vaginal pH and inhibit the growth of trichomonads. Do this once daily for a 10-day course.
(3) Vaginal medication: Use metronidazole vaginal effervescent tablets or one tablet of metronidazole vaginally. Apply this after washing the vagina each night for a 10-day course.
