What is the difference between miscarriage and menstruation?

Patient's question:

My period is a week late, I have bloating, breast pain, and feel a bit nauseous. It feels like I might be pregnant, but a pregnancy test only shows one red line. However, later on, I still had red blood flow. What is the difference between a miscarriage and a normal period?

Doctor's answer:

Taking a test paper test that is not positive and currently having your period suggests a low chance of pregnancy. After ruling out pregnancy, menstrual cycles that are one week earlier or later are generally considered normal. You can wait and see. A normal menstrual period usually cleans up within a week. If you are considering a miscarriage, the bleeding may not come on schedule and may be accompanied by some abdominal pain. If you are still worried, you can also take a blood hCG test to confirm.
There are many treatment methods in obstetrics and gynecology, but since the symptoms of patients differ, the diagnostic methods used also vary. Therefore, patients need to have timely and thorough examination and diagnosis to receive appropriate treatment.
