How to stage and treat candidal vulvovaginitis

Patient's question:

These days, while washing my underwear, I always find a lot of cheesy-looking discharge on them, and it smells very bad. I also feel that my private area is always damp and a bit itchy, and my lower abdomen is uncomfortable. Please ask:

Doctor's answer:

Considering your condition, candidiasis of the vagina causes external genital itching, burning pain in the external genitalia and vagina, increased vaginal discharge resembling cottage cheese, and sometimes accompanied by frequent urination, urinary urgency, and dysuria. During gynecological examination, white membranous substances are observed adhering to the inner side of the labia minora and vaginal mucosa. After removal, a red and swollen mucosal surface is revealed. In acute cases, visible areas of erosion or superficial ulcers may be present.
It is recommended that you visit a regular hospital for examination. Suppositories containing nystatin should be inserted into the vagina, and clotrimazole cream should be applied to the external genitalia. It is best for both partners to be treated simultaneously. During treatment, sexual activity must be strictly prohibited, and new, clean, and sterilized underwear should be worn daily. A follow-up examination should be conducted after the menstrual period. Only when three consecutive gynecological examinations and microscopic examinations of vaginal secretions show no abnormalities can the condition be considered fully cured.
