Author: Peng Yi, edited by Zhang Jingyuan

Publishing Time: Not available
Features: This textbook is designed based on two principles:
1. Gradual Progression. The content is structured to align with the foundational stage of college English, facilitating a smooth transition from basic to professional English learning. Additionally, the selection of materials, the difficulty level, and the post-lesson exercises follow a progressive approach, moving from easy to difficult and from simple to complex.
2. Emphasis on Practical English Application. The textbook is not designed to pass any English proficiency exam but focuses on developing students' ability to use English knowledge for moderately challenging spoken and written communication. It encourages students to identify gaps in their foundational language skills during English usage and purposefully address these weaknesses, achieving the goal of learning through application, promoting learning through practice, and learning by doing.
The textbook consists of two main parts: the main text and appendices. The main text includes ten units, each containing one main reading passage and one to two supplementary readings, all centered around the same theme. This structure enables learners to gather more information on a given topic, fostering active thinking and critical reading.
The post-reading comprehension exercises assess students' understanding of the passages, while the vocabulary exercises aim to enhance their proficiency in using known words and expand their vocabulary through necessary knowledge of word formation. The cloze exercises provide a concise and comprehensive summary of the passages, deepening comprehension while helping students grasp key information from technical documents, laying the foundation for oral or written communication of these contents. The translation section focuses on cultivating students' ability to accurately express given information and translate English-Chinese technical documents. The oral practice section aims to develop students' ability to express their thoughts coherently on a specific technical topic. The writing section of this book emphasizes students' understanding of the structure and characteristics of technical English, enabling them to organize complete articles logically based on logical guidance.
Teaching activities in this textbook should reflect the "student-centered" teaching philosophy. In classroom instruction, teachers are encouraged to act as guides rather than instructors, maximizing students' ability to identify and grasp the content of the technical documents they read, particularly in developing their skills to present these documents in English and express their own viewpoints.
