How old should a baby be breastfed exclusively?

Patient's question:

Baby has been born, but as a new mother, there are many things I don't understand yet. Could you please ask the doctor how long babies are usually breastfed exclusively?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, it's a pleasure to help you. Exclusive breastfeeding should be continued for at least 4 to 6 months, while appropriately introducing complementary foods. If possible, focus on breastfeeding exclusively until the baby is 1.5 years old or even longer. Around 1 to 2 months of age, some mothers may notice that the baby is easily hungry after each feeding, with longer intervals between feedings. After 8 months of breastfeeding, complementary foods should be introduced around 6 months. Weaning is best done between 8 and 12 months. If the baby is breastfeeding while also receiving complementary foods and is doing well with it, weaning can be delayed, with the latest recommended age being 1.5 years.
