Can I breastfeed after taking a shower?

Patient's question:

Baby has been born, but as a new mother, there are many things I still don't understand. Can I breastfeed after the doctor has finished the bath?

Doctor's answer:

Mothers who are breastfeeding should not feed their babies immediately after taking a bath. Traditional Chinese Medicine mentions that hot foot baths cause body heat to dissipate, and breast milk is affected by the heat, potentially turning it into "hot milk," which may harm the infant. Alternatively, if the mother takes a cold bath, the blood vessels in her body constrict due to the cold, and the breast milk becomes cold, causing further changes in its quality and quantity. If the infant consumes such breast milk, it may easily damage their spleen and stomach, and they may even develop red-white dysentery. Therefore, the habit of feeding the baby immediately after grooming should be changed. It is recommended to wait for 30 minutes after taking a bath before breastfeeding, which is most suitable.
