Normal natural menopause process

Patient's question:

I am 48 years old, and I haven't had my period for three months. I thought I had gone through menopause, but then it came back after three more months. I'm a bit scared. Could it be that I'm at the age where menopause is supposed to occur? Please tell me about the normal process of natural menopause.

Doctor's answer:

After the age of 40, women's ovarian function gradually declines, and by the age of 45 or older, the ovarian function may completely decline, leading to menopause. The natural process of menopause is as follows: first, there is a reduction in menstrual flow and a delay in the menstrual cycle. Then, over time, the delay in the menstrual cycle becomes longer and longer, sometimes occurring every 2 to 3 months. After repeated menstrual irregularities, it may be six months without a menstrual period, at which point it is considered that menopause has occurred. Moreover, during the menopausal process, significant perimenopausal symptoms may appear, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and irritability.
