Does breast milk need to be heated at room temperature?

Patient's question:

Can I store breast milk at room temperature after expressing it and then heat it with a warmer when the baby is hungry? My baby is fed every 3 hours. Will the nutritional value be compromised in this way?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, I'm happy to help you with your question: I don't know what the current indoor temperature in your home is. If the outdoor temperature is normal, but the indoor temperature is still a bit high, it is generally not advisable to leave it for more than half an hour. Breast milk is rich in nutrients and is very prone to bacterial growth. At normal indoor temperatures, it would be contaminated by bacteria after being left out for 3 hours. It's better to store it in the refrigerator. For specific situations, I recommend consulting locally. I hope my reply is helpful to you.
