When can a baby's head recover from being stretched during a normal delivery?

Patient's question:

The child in my sister's family was born vaginally, but during the birth, the child's head was compressed. I would like to know how long it takes for the newborn's head to recover after being compressed during a vaginal birth.

Doctor's answer:

During the delivery process, newborns may develop scalp edema or hematoma due to compression of the head inside the vagina. The scalp edema typically resolves within about a week. If it is a hematoma, absorption will be slower, requiring approximately two weeks to fully dissipate. Newborn scalp edema and hematoma do not require special care and will resolve on their own.
