What is Mucor Infection

Patient's question:

My mother has recently been in critical condition due to a mold infection in her lungs. We are all unaware of what exactly the mold infection is, so I would like to ask what a mold infection is?

Doctor's answer:

Mucormycosis is one of the pathogenic fungi among the zygomycetes. Initially, it appears as cotton-like fungal lesions on the wound surface and quickly invades deeper tissues. Mucormycosis can manifest in six clinical types. Pulmonary and rhinocerebral mucormycosis are the most common clinical manifestations. Others include disseminated, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, and renal types. Symptoms may include chest pain, difficulty breathing, and hemoptysis.
