Book Description:
The piano is an instrument that every music professional should master. It has a wide dynamic range and rich tonal colors, especially in performing polyphonic music, where it is unmatched by any other instrument. As a solo instrument, it can be played independently without the accompaniment of any other instruments. Its captivating tone and profound techniques have made countless performers strive for excellence throughout their lives. As an accompanying instrument, its powerful harmonic function, diverse tonal variations, and compatibility with various other instruments make it an ideal choice for concert accompaniment. Additionally, as a tool for learning music, the piano is easy to understand and learn, with broad applications, quickly becoming a valuable assistant for music learners. Therefore, the popularity of the piano surpasses that of any other instrument.
There are countless piano music works available, ranging from various styles, forms, and types. When compiling this textbook, we primarily considered the principle of gradual progression in teaching, ensuring systematic and comprehensive development for students. We also aimed to include a wide range of优秀 piano works from different eras and cultures. However, due to constraints in textbook length, it was impossible to encompass everything, and we had to make difficult choices regarding many excellent works.
This textbook is designed for the general piano course in music programs at universities and colleges. It can be adapted to the specific needs, foundation, and abilities of students, with the expectation that they will complete one book within a year. Additionally, it is suitable for piano majors as well as music enthusiasts for self-study.

Considering the characteristics of non-piano majors, we have appropriately increased the number of etudes in the textbook and included basic exercises such as scales, arpeggios, and targeted finger technique exercises like those in Czerny and Marguerite Long to enhance students' finger skills and better meet the learning needs of non-piano majors. In terms of pieces, we have also selected more Chinese and contemporary works, which is a distinguishing feature of this textbook.
The textbook alternates between etudes, polyphonic pieces, sonatas, and other types of works to ensure comprehensive development in piano playing techniques through its study.
