Book Description:
Introduction to the Arts is a foundational theoretical course for music majors. It enables students to broadly engage with various art works, appreciate different types of artistic styles, and understand the essence of art and its creative principles.
Art is a form of social consciousness and simultaneously a superstructure of a certain society. It has a complex relationship with the economic base and other superstructures such as politics. This relationship determines the role of art in social life. Therefore, to study the position of art in society, one must clarify the relationship between art, the economic base, and other superstructures.
As a form of social consciousness and superstructure, art inevitably exerts a reaction on society—either promoting or hindering its development. The reaction of art on society has its own characteristics and specific pathways. This effect is collectively referred to as the aesthetic educational function. A correct understanding of the role and special function of art in social life allows for a more conscious grasp of this pattern, enabling art to better serve the people and socialism. As people's material living standards continue to improve, their demands for spiritual and cultural life are increasingly high. Through practice, people are becoming more deeply aware of the significant role that art education plays in further strengthening socialist spiritual civilization construction, in cultivating a new generation of well-rounded individuals with moral, intellectual, physical, and aesthetic qualities, in enhancing the spiritual quality of the entire population, in flourishing literary and artistic creation, and in improving the aesthetic ability of the masses. The publication of Introduction to the Arts is precisely to meet the demands of the times and society.

During the writing process, we strove to provide a complete, systematic, and accurate exposition of the basic principles of Marxism on art; to closely relate theory to artistic phenomena such as music, dance, fine arts, theater, film, and architecture, combining theory with artistic practice to give the book a unique character; and to make it clear, accessible, lively, and engaging. In terms of content, we paid attention to both traditional art in China and abroad and the exploration of new disciplines and fields in art education and research, aiming to disseminate the latest achievements in modern art education and research in a fresh way. This allows readers to cultivate their artistic appreciation, enjoy beauty, and enhance their ability to create and appreciate beauty in the realm of art.
