Reasons Why Harry Fans Buy the English Version of Harry Potter: It is reported that many Harry fans buy the English version of Harry Potter mainly for collection purposes. Buying the English version is like collecting the "original" version. Additionally, the Chinese version is released several months later than the English version. The author predicts that the Chinese version will be available at the earliest by October. Harry fans want to see the book first and take pride in owning it early, which is why Harry Potter books sell exceptionally well in the first few days of release. In fact, the English versions are all hardcover and relatively expensive. Softcover versions will be released after a period of time, and their prices will drop significantly. However, Harry fans is the "freshness" of having the latest book.
Moreover, for some middle and high school readers, buying the English original is to read it alongside the Chinese version. This serves both as a reading hobby and as a way to improve their English skills.
Differences Between the English Versions of Harry Potter in the U.S. and the U.K.: To prevent piracy and protect their rights, the author J.K. Rowling has authorized only five publishers in the U.K., U.S., Canada, Australia, and South Africa to publish the English version. However, due to transportation routes and costs, the main versions imported into China are the U.K. and U.S. versions. In the U.K., the versions are further divided into children's and adult versions, with the only difference being the cover. In the U.S., there is only one version. So, what are the differences between the U.S. and U.K. versions? The U.S. editor explains that the differences are mainly due to subtle variations between American and British English. For example, the U.K. uses "jumper" to refer to a sweater, while in the U.S., it is interpreted as a high jumper's attire. Therefore, the U.S. version uses "sweater" instead. The U.S. version mainly makes similar changes.
Taking the upcoming Harry Potter 6 as an example, the U.S. and U.K. versions differ in cover and binding but are identical in content, even page numbers (both 672 pages). However, based on past comparisons, the U.K. version uses yellowed paper, while the U.S. version uses slightly whiter paper. As a result, the U.S. version has a higher contrast between the font and paper, making it easier to read without strain. Additionally, the U.S. version has a larger format and wider line spacing, which also aids in reading. In my opinion, the U.K. version's cover, binding, and printing emphasize a classic and mysterious style, while the U.S. version has a more modern and bright design.
In previous years, the number of U.S. versions imported was very limited because the import cost was higher than that of the U.K. version. Starting from Harry Potter 5 in 2003, the largest book importer in China, China National Import & Export (Group) Corporation, began to increase the import volume of U.S. versions, which received positive market response. For this year's Harry Potter 6, the company will continue to increase the import of U.S. versions because, although slightly more expensive, they are better for protecting the eyesight of young readers. In fact, there is one more point: the U.S. version began shipping to countries outside the U.S. on June 27, giving importers 19 days before the global release on July 16 to prepare. In contrast, the U.K. version can only ship as early as July 7, leaving importers with only 9 days for booking, transportation, customs clearance, and other operations—very tight.
Due to the uncertainties in the import process, importing both versions is a measure taken by importers to ensure that books are available on July 16. As a result, the U.S. version will arrive in China before the U.K. version. Even without considering domestic transportation time, middle and small cities can definitely receive the U.S. version before July 16. Readers who pre-order the U.S. version and need it mailed will also have a higher chance of receiving their books earlier after July 16.
