Features: The Maya people's understanding of the universe and their astronomical achievements gave the layout of Maya cities a clear orientation, reflecting the planning of a mature civilization. Maya city-states were not only administrative centers and residences of the royal family but also religious, ceremonial, and economic centers of the city-state. The centers of Maya city-states experienced cycles of prosperity and decline, with architectural scale and achievements primarily concentrated in sites such as Palenque, Copán, Tikal, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, and Mayapan. Both the Maya and the Egyptians were fond of building pyramids. Egyptian pyramids were hollow, simple in design, and unadorned on the surface, while Maya pyramids featured stepped structures, often with temples at the top, and were generally hollow. However, the tomb of King Bahlam I was discovered in the foundation of the Hieroglyphic Temple at Palenque. The Maya had a natural affinity for stone construction, and building with stone required significantly more time. Without a strong religious spirit, it is hard to imagine how such a large number of structures were completed. No wonder people, when they see the grand scale of Maya sites covered in stone architecture, marvel at how such structures could have been built with the technology and logistical conditions of the time. In Tikal's architecture, the religious aspect is particularly evident. The massive scale of the exterior buildings contrasts sharply with the narrow spaces inside. The deities were the priority, and whether the spaces were comfortable for human habitation seemed irrelevant. Maya buildings were often adorned with vibrant colors. Over time and due to the destruction of the tropical rainforest, only faint traces of paint remain on some structures, and the original luster has long faded. Through long-term artistic practice, the Maya understood the power of color. The brilliant decorative colors on their buildings made them stand out against the green tropical jungle, embodying the glory of the city-state.
