The printed pages of this book consist of three flashcards, printed on both sides. The cards are separated by dotted lines, and readers can divide them and organize them according to the numbering on the cards. Each card's front side displays 6 words with their phonetic transcriptions and an example sentence, while the back contains part of speech, Chinese and English definitions, synonyms, antonyms, derivative words, and related vocabulary hints as well as topic tips. When using the cards, readers can recall the meaning based on the English words and example sentences. If they forget, they can flip to the back. This book includes over 4,500 college-level first-tier vocabulary and pre-four-level words, totaling 766 cards. In middle school, readers should have mastered at least 1,700 of these words. Considering this, it is recommended that readers spend an average of 180 seconds reviewing and memorizing the 6 words on each card (though the time will vary depending on the word's familiarity and individual memorization speed). Following this plan, readers can study the 4,500 first-tier exam words four times within a week, making passing the exam effortless.
Each card's front side includes vocabulary, pronunciation, and an example sentence. The vocabulary is completely aligned with the annotations in the "Vocabulary List for College English Teaching Syllabus," ensuring that candidates are familiar with multiple pronunciations to avoid disadvantages in listening exams. The example sentences are taken from first-tier exam questions or exemplary English literature, with some edited and rewritten by the authors. The sentences highlight the meaning of the words. The authors believe that readers can grasp the basic usage of a word from the example sentences on the front.
Additionally, many four-level vocabulary books include comparisons of related synonyms, but these are all explained in Chinese. Based on years of teaching experience, the authors find that these Chinese explanations of English vocabulary often fail to accurately convey the fundamental differences between words. Even after detailed explanations, readers may feel confused or develop biased impressions. In this book, the authors refer to authoritative British and American dictionaries, compile English definitions, and provide their own analyses, helping readers remember synonyms, antonyms, and derivative words.
