On the afternoon of December 9, 2000, at 4:50 PM, a major armed robbery of a bank occurred at the Guangdong Development Bank Jigen Commercial City Branch in Zhengzhou City. Four masked bandits armed with shotguns broke into the first-floor lobby, used an explosive device to shatter the bulletproof glass above the counter, jumped into the lobby counter, and robbed 2.08 million yuan in cash from the branch. During their escape, the masked bandits shot and killed Chang Yujie, the Deputy Director of the Security Department at Jigen Commercial City. This was the shocking national "12·9" Bank Robbery. The Zhengzhou Bank Robberies were another series of vicious robbery and murder cases following the Changde Massacre and the Nanchang Massacre. The "12·9" major armed bank robbery was designated by the Ministry of Public Security as the second-largest case in China in 2000.
