New Century English Speaking Course (3) (Communication and Improvement)

Author: Li Huadong
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-01-01
Features: Each unit includes four major sections:
Listening: Provides cultural notes and discusses cultural differences. Helps students understand and overcome communication barriers, avoiding communication errors. Accompanied by recordings for listening practice.
Reading: Offers several texts centered around the unit theme, increasing information and language input. For these texts, teachers can choose:
(1) Assigning students to study them as homework to allow more time for "speaking" in class;
(2) Selecting some for in-class reading and discussion, fostering creative language use to achieve communicative goals and develop fluency.
After each unit, the Notes section is designed to facilitate and benefit learning. Most notes are bilingual (English-Chinese), while a few use only one language. English explanations are omitted when the meaning is simple and clear in English or when learners are familiar with synonyms. Chinese explanations are omitted when English definitions would be confusing.
Writing: Combines cross-cultural contexts to emphasize the communicative purpose of writing, reinforcing learned content, developing logical thinking, and enhancing oral coherence.
Additionally, each unit includes:
- Related words and expressions: To expand students' vocabulary related to the unit theme.
- Useful designs: Including humor, riddles, and puns related to the theme to boost learning interest.
- Quotations: To deepen understanding of the unit theme, which students can memorize, use in communicative activities, or organize discussions and debates.
- English songs (in some units): To liven up the atmosphere, increase language learning interest, improve pronunciation and intonation, especially rhythm, assimilation, elision, and linking. Song lyrics are relevant to the unit and include fill-in-the-blank exercises for listening practice and reinforcing the theme.
At the end of the book, there are five appendices for reference:
1. Common functional sentence patterns
2. Interjections
3. Modal words
4. Tongue twisters
5. Classroom activities
These are provided for the textbook users.
