Editorial Style and Notes:
1. This dictionary includes approximately 6,500 pieces of seal impressions and inscriptions from 340 representative deceased Chinese calligraphers, painters, and seal engravers since 1901 to 2001.
2. The arrangement of this dictionary is based on the birth years of the authors. If birth years are the same, they are ordered by the stroke count of their surnames. An index of surnames by stroke count and a phonetic index of surnames are appended after the main text for easy reference.
3. The seal impressions of the calligraphers, painters, and seal engravers included in this dictionary are original enlargements, provided by the artists themselves or their relatives. For some deceased artists, the impressions were directly photographed from their original works, still maintaining their original size.
4. The inscriptions of the calligraphers and painters included in this dictionary are written in their own handwriting. A few were photographed from original works or albums, books, and periodicals. Due to editorial requirements, the inscriptions of each artist may be scaled down or up, and the number of included pieces varies depending on the length of the entries.
5. The textual introductions of the calligraphers, painters, and seal engravers included in this dictionary are primarily based on materials provided by the artists themselves or their relatives, supplemented by relevant research materials. They are written to concisely, objectively, and accurately reflect the artistic achievements of the artists.
6. The number of individuals included in this dictionary is not evenly distributed across provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions.
7. This dictionary is compiled based on the 1998-published Dictionary of Seal Impressions and Inscriptions of Modern Chinese Painters and Calligraphers and the September 2002-published Dictionary of Seal Impressions and Inscriptions of Chinese Painters and Calligraphers in the 20th Century, with a narrowed scope and selected materials. It includes approximately 6,500 pieces of seal impressions and inscriptions from 340 representative deceased Chinese calligraphers, painters, and seal engravers since 1901 to 2001.
