Benito Mussolini (Benito Mussolini, 1883–1945) was an Italian politician and fascist military dictator who served as the Prime Minister of Italy from 1922 to 1943 and the leader of the National Fascist Party. He implemented fascist rule, declaring the Fascist Party the only legal political party, suppressing communist movements and other democratic movements, and placing the Italian people under state oppression. He used his army to help Francisco Franco seize power in Spain and actively cooperated with Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler in both political and military matters. In 1939, Italian forces occupied Albania. He assisted Germany in invading countries such as Britain and France. Due to the people's anti-fascist movement, King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy dismissed and placed him under house arrest in 1943. After escaping with Hitler's help, he established a pro-German puppet government in northern Italy in 1945 and was captured and killed by local partisans.
