Features: The book you must read at least once in your lifetime, whether you are ten, thirty, or seventy years old! A minimalist reading list of Chinese culture. From the vast collection of ancient classics, sixty classics have been selected to comprehensively present the style and appearance of Chinese five thousand years of culture in a relaxed and easy-to-read format. A renowned Taiwanese authority on classical Chinese culture re-examines the classics with a 21st-century perspective, traversing the past and present, covering vast distances, and guiding you into the "unfenced museum of Chinese culture."
The Northern people's learning is profound and extensive, while the Southern people's learning is clear and concise. The sages and virtuous men have forgotten to speak. From the middle-aged to the Northern people, reading books is like viewing the moon in the open; the Southern people's learning is like peering at the sun through a window. The original title of this book was Shishuo. During the Liang and Chen dynasties, it was renamed Shishuo Xinshu. The Tang people called it Shishuo Xinyu. The Song people called it Jin-Song Qitán. In modern times, it is commonly known as Shishuo Xinyu. Here, for the sake of simplicity, I also call it Six Dynasties Strange Tales. The titles of the thirty-six chapters are arranged according to the original book, with no changes. The subheadings under each chapter are rewritten and added, as they do not exist in the original book. Each story is selected from the original book, accounting for more than 90% of the total content. As for the content of the stories, to make them more popular and interesting, I have incorporated a large amount of material from the annotations. Therefore, the rewriting of this Shishuo is not a direct translation into vernacular Chinese; it cannot be directly compared with the original text.
The plan for rewriting this book is intended for preliminary reading by young people. Therefore, the language used is kept simple. The meaning of each story is indicated by the headings as needed. Some headings use classical Chinese to preserve the idioms.
Here’s the translation of the given content into English: "Readings from The New Stories of the World – Anomalies of the Six Dynasties" Note: The line breaks () are preserved as instructed.
