The ten-day battle of Changde, with only hundreds of soldiers remaining from the 57th Division of the Chinese Army attacking the Japanese forces in Changde, resulted in two major lieutenant commanders of the Japanese army being killed by the Chinese forces. Changsha, which had withstood three large-scale Japanese offensives for six years, fell into enemy hands within days. General Zhang Degen of the Fourth Army was executed by military law for the loss of Changsha. The fierce battle of Hengyang lasted for forty-seven days. General Fang Xianju of the Tenth Army surrendered after running out of ammunition and supplies. Over eight months, both land and air forces fought bravely; the entire nation achieved great unity; millions of soldiers and countless people joined the front lines; among them, hundreds of thousands sacrificed their lives gloriously and heroically while fulfilling their sacred duties. Many of them were members of the Kuomintang, the Communist Party of China, other political parties, or non-partisan individuals. We sincerely mourn these deceased and pay eternal tribute to them. From the generals such as Hao Mengling, Tong Linge, Zhao Dengyu, Rao Guohua, and Liu Jiaqi to every single soldier, they all set an exalted and example for the Chinese people.
