Famous figures and experts in the field of English discuss reading: "A few dry English sentences about reading are not enough. Don't always put the purpose of reading on improving English. Reading is primarily about absorbing knowledge, and in the process of absorbing knowledge, language is naturally absorbed. The book tells a fairy tale about the pastoral life and touching friendships of several small animals living in nature—the mole living underground, the water rat living by the river, the badger living in the primeval forest, and the toad living in the toad's mansion. The mole, water rat, badger, and toad are four good friends. The mole met the water rat on a spring day and became good friends, starting to live together. The water rat is honest, kind, understanding, and always willing to help, showing meticulous care for the mole, who in turn is loyal and admires him greatly. The toad, living in the toad's mansion, is arrogant and self-centered, squandering the modest inheritance left by his father. He also loves reckless adventures and is easily bored with new things, always resorting to desperate means to obtain them. During an adventure with the mole and water rat, he sees a car and becomes obsessed with it, constantly buying cars, getting into accidents, and being hospitalized repeatedly. The toad's behavior worries his friends, who always try to help him change his bad habits and reform.
The mole, having long admired the badger living in the primeval forest, but unable to meet him, decides to visit him alone while the water rat is asleep. However, the dark and frightening primeval forest, with its various animals and sounds, scares the simple mole, who hides in a tree hole. When the water rat finally finds him, it is snowing, and they get lost in the snow but coincidentally find the badger's home. The badger and the mole instantly connect and become close friends.
The toad's obsession with cars leads him to steal and drive others' new cars, resulting in his imprisonment. Fortunately, he is helped by the jailer's daughter, who helps him escape disguised as a laundry woman, enduring many hardships to do so. Upon returning home, the toad discovers that the toad's mansion has been occupied by weasels, who are causing chaos.
In the end, guided by the badger, the four animals use their wits to cleverly defeat the enemy and reclaim the toad's mansion. The toad also reforms his faults. Meanwhile, the mole matures through life's trials, with the clever water rat and the steady badger's help.
