Mongolia and the Papacy (Translation Series of Famous Works on Sino-foreign Relations)

Author: (French) Paul Pelliot / Feng Chengjun
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-03-01
Features: The westward expedition of the Mongols opened the path for communication between China and Europe, leading to a series of missions sent by the Roman Catholic Church to the Mongol Khans. The documents preserved in the archives of the Church and the records in church history books serve as evidence for these historical facts and have long been valued and studied by scholars. Paul Pelliot's article was published in three parts: the first part in 1923, the second and third chapters in 1924, and the third chapter in 1931, with a gap of seven years between them. As a result, there is some repetition in certain parts. However, the article cites a large number of Latin and Persian historical sources, church history books, as well as some specialized books and papers written by Western scholars, many of which are not easily accessible. In particular, the explanations and research on the deeds and of three individuals—Lebede, Atilgan, and Andron Runemu—are still of certain reference value for the study of Sino-foreign relations and Mongol history.
