Novel Hong Kong

Author: Zhao Xifang
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-04-01
Features: The term "novel Hong Kong" originates from Wang Deli's "novel China." Wang Deli's concept of "novel China" does not limit itself to "understanding China through novels," but rather emphasizes that fictional modes such as novels often serve as the starting point for imagining and narrating "China." The establishment and growth of a nation are inseparable from bloodshed, warfare, or the normal rhythms of politics. However, when it comes to the summoning of national spirit, the cohesion of the state, the shaping of national character, or even the compilation of national history, we cannot but acknowledge the necessity of narration, the necessity of imagination, and the necessity of novels (fiction!).
Starting from novels, the author attempts to analyze the complex and ever-changing cultural identity of Hong Kong in the context of historical construction, while also establishing his own perspective for narrating Hong Kong literature from the perspective of the city. Compared to existing research, this book offers a completely new research perspective, differing significantly from Hong Kong literary histories that are limited to general descriptions of writers and works. I believe that the publication of this book represents an important contribution to the study of Hong Kong literature in mainland China.
