Author: Shao Bowen
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-01-01
Features: This book consists of 20 volumes. Shao Bowen experienced the Wang Anshi Reforms in his early years, the Yuanyou Faction Strife in his middle years, and the Jingkang Calamity in his later years, so his observations were extremely rich. The book contains extensive accounts of the Wang Anshi Reforms and also records some of the court rules, institutions, and anecdotes of the early Northern Song Dynasty. Shao’s Anecdotal Records (), written by the Northern Song scholar Shao Bowen, is also known as Shao’s Anecdotal Records of Henan () or Shao’s Earlier Anecdotal Records (). The character "Earlier" was added by later scholars to distinguish it from Shao’s Later Anecdotal Records (), written by Shao Bowen’s son, Shao Bo. The content of the book can be broadly categorized into the following types:
1. Records the words, thoughts, anecdotes, and even some trivial family matters of both proponents and opponents of the Wang Anshi Reforms, providing unique historical materials for later generations to understand this period. Shao Bowen offered both praise and criticism for the representative figures on both sides, such as Wang Anshi and Sima Guang. However, overall, he praised the opponents of the reforms more highly, expressing a greater admiration for their moral integrity and political stance than for the reformers.
2. Records some of the court rules, institutions, and anecdotes from the Northern Song Dynasty’s court and palace. Apart from Shao Yong’s fantastical writings, the book also allows readers to understand this great scholar’s moral character and literary style from the perspective of his daily life and social interactions.
However, the book also contains many inaccuracies and malicious slanders in its records, primarily due to Shao Bowen’s political biases toward the reforms and his involvement in factional struggles. In summary, Shao’s Anecdotal Records is a valuable historical source for studying the history of the Song Dynasty, especially the history of the Wang Anshi Reforms, and it holds particular significance for researching the faction that opposed the reforms.
