This book provides a specific analysis and evaluation of Hume's philosophy from historical and dialectical perspectives, clarifying its significance and impact. For this purpose, the book is arranged in the following content and structure.
(1) The book will conduct a relatively comprehensive examination and review of Hume's philosophy, but it will not—and cannot—be all-encompassing; it will focus on certain aspects.
(2) The book will pay special attention to the textual research and study of Hume's original works, striving to accurately understand and grasp his doctrines in their original sense. Although achieving this is quite challenging, especially for Hume's notoriously difficult-to-read works, it becomes even more so. However, working diligently with the original texts is the most fundamental method for accurately understanding a philosopher's thought. Precisely because Hume's works are prone to misinterpretation, it becomes even more important to persist in studying his original texts.
(3) As one researcher of Hume's philosophy has said, Hume's writings are "a mirror of his character." Therefore, to aid in understanding Hume's philosophical thought, the book dedicates a chapter to introducing Hume's life and works. Additionally, the writing and publication details of Hume's major philosophical works are listed as an appendix at the end of the book.
