The historian's expertise and the journalist's keen insight have crafted a distinctive writing style. Whether discussing scholarship, history, events, or people, Tang Zhenchang's historical writings exhibit unique perspectives. Within the sweeping brushstrokes, one sees thought. Mr. Tang's historical writings not only possess profound historical vision, rich experiences, solid historical materials, and rigorous historical writing but also personality, sharpness, and depth, just as the knowledgeable have said: "Mr. Tang Zhenchang's historical style truly embodies the essence of Chinese history as described in Chinese tradition."
The articles included in this collection, except for three, are the author's recent works. They can be roughly divided into three categories: one discusses literature and history, the second reviews books and comments, and the third reflects on people. This classification is somewhat arbitrary, as the first and second categories are difficult to strictly distinguish. Both are close to the feelings one gains from reading, yet the first category tends to extend the discussion, while the second focuses more on the subject at hand. Two prefaces are included in the second category, as they were written for books. The third category consists of reflections on people, with one exception being a living individual. They are all the author's respected teachers, predecessors, and friends.
