Features: The Jieziyuan Painting Manual is a well-known and excellent painting atlas used as an introductory textbook for Chinese painting. Since its publication, it has become a classic for painters. Based on the discussions and illustrations of The Jieziyuan Painting Manual, this book has been reorganized to refine and select the essence, while also selecting relevant works by great painters from past generations, either in full or partial form, to accompany the illustrations for explanation. The combination of text and images aims to achieve a clearer understanding. The Jieziyuan Painting Manual served as a textbook for beginners learning Chinese painting techniques, teaching basic skills such as brushwork, shaping forms, and composition. Through this approach, one can initially appreciate the fine traditions of ancient techniques. Today’s reprint of The Jieziyuan Painting Manual is not meant to encourage imitation of its models, but rather to guide learners in mastering brushwork and shaping techniques, followed by observation and creation from real life. It must be emphasized that the most important aspect of creation is to learn from nature and draw inspiration from real life. Copying and referencing ancient techniques is merely a starting point. Only by initially grasping traditional techniques, coupled with skills in sketching and a deep understanding of life, can one create vivid and lively works that reflect socialism and embody national style realism. For beginners practicing brushwork, shaping forms, and composition, The Jieziyuan Painting Manual can serve as a reference. The Jieziyuan Painting Manual was compiled and illustrated during the early Qing Dynasty, when the artistic style favored copying and imitating the ancients. Therefore, this book only introduces the techniques of brushwork, shaping forms, and composition used by predecessors. However, it fails to discuss how to apply these techniques in observation and creation, which is its greatest shortcoming. In summary, The Jieziyuan Painting Manual has a long history, and its preface, postscript, or other textual descriptions have not been altered.
