Features: With the acceleration of the reform and opening-up, the Department of History has adjusted its strategic goals and designed its development path based on its disciplinary strengths and characteristics. In accordance with the school's deployment, the New Century History Textbook Editorial Committee was established. With the strong support and cooperation of Beijing Normal University Press, the revision of the history foundation course textbooks published in the 1990s was carried out first. The aim is to promote the improvement of teaching quality and the realization of new talent cultivation goals through the revision and use of high-quality textbooks. This revision still adheres to the principle of taking historical materialism as the guiding ideology, combining the needs of academic development and teaching reform, and incorporating new academic achievements and teaching concepts to adapt to the current trends of higher education and the teaching and learning of history disciplines. It aims to provide a relatively novel, comprehensive, and widely applicable foundation course textbook for university history education in the 21st century. Considering the characteristics and advantages of this textbook, no major changes are planned in the overall framework. Specifically, the original chapter, section, and sub-item structure remains largely unchanged. Several pictures are added before the main text, illustrations and maps are included in the text as needed, and several discussion questions are appended after each chapter. A reference bibliography is provided at the end of the book. The book consists of 11 chapters, including Western capitalist expansion and China's response, the rise of the Taiping Rebellion, the Second Opium War and the decline of the Taiping Rebellion, the high tide of national salvation movements, the Hundred Days' Reform and the Boxer Rebellion, among others.
